Chronicling the Yankees' season from my view in the bleachers.

November 29, 2005

I can't believe it. Do my eyes deceive me?

This morning when I saw the Daily News headline, CF SHOCKER, I thought the worst. I thought that maybe they made some stupid trade or signed Damon for 10 years or some such travesty. Then I read the smaller print: Torre ponders shifting Jeter or A-Rod to center field. Could what many of us have been calling for actually happen?

The article indicates that Torre hasn't talked this over with the guys yet. I think that's a good move by Joe. If it gets to the point where they do need to turn to one of them to play center it becomes more difficult for them to turn it down. Doing so could cast that player in a negative light, like he's not willing to sacrifice for the team.

I think most Yankee fans can agree that Jeter should be the one to move. He has better range on pop-flies and it would put A-Rod back to his natural position. It would also open up third for Eric Duncan, who's had to learn to play first base since the hot corner is currently blocked for the next several years.

I've seen many Yankee fans getting edgy lately with the lack of action taken by the front office (especially after the Beckett-to-Boston trade). But if moves like this one are what they're planning doing, I'm not terribly worried. It seems like the Yankees are thinking for a change instead of just reacting.
